Fence upgrade at Langa sportsfield nearing completion

The City’s Recreation and Parks Department is finalising the R 4 million field and fencing rehabilitation project at the Langa complex. These upgrades will contribute towards a safe and secure sporting environment for members of the community, safeguard playing surfaces against damage and promote the growth of various sports and recreational activities.
The Langa Sports complex, a central hub for soccer, cricket and hockey enthusiasts also caters for improved facilities for the broader community, including athletes, sports enthusiasts and event organisers.
The upgrade, which commenced on 16 August 2023, is currently at 95% completion, and is scheduled for completion by the end of this month. The project was initiated to address a range of challenges, including field damage caused by spectator encroachment and the deterioration of fencing infrastructure.
Key components of this project include the replacement of fencing on Soccer Field A, the replacement of bollards with 1,2m fencing, the upgrade of cricket net fencing and the installation of new perimeter and backstop fencing on the hockey field, amounting to a total of more than R 2,5 million.
These enhancements aim to not only strengthen the facility, but also introduce features such as gates to ensure the protection of artificial surfaces when not in use, resulting in increased safety and the longevity of the facility.
The field rehabilitation and maintenance plan included aerovating the playing fields and applying topsoil and fertilizer, at a cost of R 1,695,640.58.
A successful partnership with the Langa Safety Patrol ensured the construction site's security and community members received detailed information about the project's scope before its implementation.

The Langa Sports Complex has produced many national athletes such as Thabo Mngomeni, Themba Bavuma, Thami Tsolekile and Sinazo Mcatshulwa who have in turn put the name of the facility and this community on the map. To ensure that this facility keeps on producing national quality sportsmen and women we have to ensure that it is safe and in good standard and this project has done just that,' said ward 51 councillor Lwazi Phakade.
Future plans for the Langa Sports Complex include building upgrades scheduled for the 2024/2025 financial year, reaffirming a sustained commitment to enhancing sports infrastructure in the community.
